Kid Hustle: The Lemonade Stand

When looking for a hustle that will earn money, the best advice on how to make money is give the customer what they want.  With the summer upon us, now is the best time to take advantage of the time old tradition of the lemonade stand.

My son and I enjoy reading a book together prior to bedtime, and we recently read The Berenstain Bears’ Lemonade Stand.  After reading the book, my son asked if we could have our own lemonade stand.  And so this project was born.

We took advantage of a local park that we enjoying visiting as the location to set up the lemonade stand.  Something to consider when you are picking a location is that there will be a good amount of foot traffic for potential customers as well as plenty of shade for your stand.

The process to make lemonade is really easy, all it takes is lemons, sugar, and water.  The following was our recipe to make 1 gallon of lemonade:

2 cups of sugar
2 cups of freshly squeezed lemon juice

Pour the sugar and lemon juice into a 1 gallon container and add water until the container is full.  Stir until the sugar is dissolved and then chill.  The greatest thing about lemonade is you can easily adjust the recipe to meet your preference of sweet and sour.

Some other items you will need to make the little business succeed are:

Ice cubes
Small Change

My son had no problem approaching people to ask them if they would like to buy lemonade.  But during times when no new customers were in the area, he did have issues regarding boredom.  Plan ahead to have some activities.  We had a good time playing soccer with each other.

My final suggestion is to leave electronic devices at home instead of bringing them along as entertainment.  My son, wife and I all bonded over this experience and enjoyed the time together.

Wishing you and your children much success with your lemonade business!
